SEDI Expands Its Role in the Community as Part of the NARBHA Institute
The Sustainable Economic Development Initiative (SEDI) is pleased to announce that it has become a subsidiary of the NARBHA Institute. This affiliation recognizes both organizations’ shared mission in promoting healthy and livable communities in northern Arizona.
Dr. James Wurgler, NARBHA Board Chair and immediate past SEDI President, said “SEDI has begun a new and exciting chapter. As part of the NARBHA Institute, SEDI will be able to expand its work by continuing to take a leadership role in sustainable economic development while expanding our scope of interests to include such areas as housing, transportation, hunger relief, and criminal justice.”
SEDIʼs mission for more than a decade has been to promote sustainable economic prosperity in northern Arizona through ecological health, social equity, and a resilient economy. Its Board and committee members have included elected officials, business leaders, educational leaders and other community leaders. In 2009, SEDI was recognized with the Governor's Excellence Award for Innovation in Economic Development for noteworthy, creative and innovative techniques brought to bear on challenging economic development situations.
In the past year alone, SEDI has created jobs through its successful Dollars for Dreams business micro-loan program, played a key role in developing a micro-entrepreneurship center and community-supported marketplace in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Flagstaff, worked with the Hopi Nation on a nutrition and food independence initiative, and led initiatives in Yavapai County to increase the availability of healthy food. SEDI’s education programs have recognized outstanding northern Arizona teachers by making more than $60,000 in cash awards.
The Sustainable Economic Development Initiative, an economic development organization supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs, enables, facilitates, and partners with businesses, educational institutions, and government to increase social equity, ecological health, and promote a resilient economy in northern Arizona.
